Keep scrolling for a breakdown of the difference between ATV and UTV, detailing the differences, pros, cons, and safety precautions to help inform your decision-making.

What is an ATV?

ATV stands for All-terrain vehicle. They are also known as "quads" and can also be used for racing. ATVs are generally compact and accommodate no more than two people at a time in terms of features.

ATV Use

In regards to use, ATVs are used primarily for recreational purposes like hunting and outdoor adventure. However, ATVs are still helpful in the realm of agriculture. They are commonly used for various tasks on farms, like inspecting crops and livestock, fertilizing the land, and feeding livestock.

ATV Benefits

ATVs are light and nimble, making them great for tackling obstacles like deep ruts, large rocks, streams, and steep inclines/declines. Because they can easily handle varied terrain from road riding to miles of trail systems, ATVs are incredibly popular among most outdoor adventurers.

What is a UTV?

Although UTV stands for Utility Terrain Vehicle, people usually refer to it as a UTV or a side-by-side. More commonly, they are quad vehicles or known as side by sides. However, they can have up to 6 wheels if designed for more specialized tasks. UTVs are built with a lot of storage space and can operate up to four people. They are primarily used for utility tasks like transporting heavy materials like animal feed, hay, equipment, or supplies.

UTV Use

Arguably, UTVs are more convenient than using a tractor and are essentially indispensable for many farmers. Although they are primarily used for utility purposes, UTVs can also be used for recreational purposes and are likely a safer family-friendly option. They come with safety features, including a cabin, windshield, roll bars, and seat belts.

UTV Benefits

UTVs are generally faster and more powerful than their ATV counterparts and serve more utility purposes (hence the name). They are an excellent choice for farmers or other laborers that need assistance with manual labor and provide convenience and maneuverability.

ATV & UTV Safety Precautions

The golden rule when it pertains to ATV or UTV safety includes wearing a DOT-compliant helmet and goggles at all times while riding or driving an ATV or UTV. We also recommend wearing long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots- and gloves for even more protection from the elements or a potential injury.

You should make sure you ride an ATV that is right for your age and size. Further, make sure you only carry the recommended number of passengers. For ATVs, this is at most 2, with one driver and one the passenger. For UTVs, this number is at most 4 with one drive and three passengers. Riding with more than the recommended number of passengers, increasing the chances of injury exponentially.

ATVs and UTVS are designed to be ridden on ATV trails or designated areas, not on paved roads or highways (other motor vehicles may hit you). It should also be common sense, but never operate a UTV or ATV under the influence of alcohol or any other type of medication or drug.

Again, ATVs are not toys! To ensure your safety and the safety of others, always express caution. If riders are under the age of 16, adults should supervise.

Where to Ride

Where you are located will impact your proximity to places to ride your UTV or ATV. It is important to note that there are equal opportunities for year-round riding for both vehicle options.

A few of our favorites are the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System which is is one of the most famous riding trails in the country; Imperial Sand Dunes, located in California known for hosting the largest recreation area for sand dunes in the United States;

Ride Royal Blue Resort in Tennessee that boasts 600 miles of ATV trails featuring waterfalls and wildlife; and lastly, Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area that extends 40 miles long with dunes as high as 500 feet

*Before heading out to a state forest or state park to ride, make sure you check if the park is open and confirm any regulations you should be aware of.

If you plan on tackling miles of trails through the forest or a more intricate trail system, ATVs are likely a better option for you. Whereas, if you are looking for a safer utility vehicle, UTVs are the way to go. Further, UTV's tend to be more expensive than ATVs because of their versatility and safety features.

Truthfully, both power sport vehicles are excellent, and you can conquer any epic terrain with a UTV or ATV. Your decision between the two should be dependent on your needs and the intended use.
